SSI Library to Close for Furniture Installation Project
The St. Simons Island Library is getting a facelift. On March 26, the library will be closed to the public for 3 weeks to install new furniture and additional shelving, freshen the paint, as well as reconfigure the current shelving into a new layout.
Before beginning we need your help. Between now and 5 PM on March 25, please stop by and check out as many books as you want. The more books you check out, the fewer books staff need to move and store during the project. Due dates will be extended, and items checked out won’t be due until the end of April 2021.
Please do not return items to the library during the closure. Staff will be waiving any late fees that may accrue due to the service interruption. Holds going to the SSI Library will also be paused until the library reopens. Throughout the entire project, the Brunswick Library will be fully operational. Patrons may check out, return, and renew items at the Brunswick location. At any time, patrons may check the status of their library account and renew items online through gapines.org.
Funding for the project has generously been provided by private donations, with the majority of the capital thanks to a generous bequeath from Belitje Bancker Bull. Mrs. Bull was a dedicated supporter of the library and maintained a lifelong love of the organization, spending many hours enjoying the library with her children and husband over the years. The library also received a bequeath from Lee Scheinman, a longtime patron and supporter of the library. A donation was made to complete the adult reading area by Carolyn Strohm in memory of her son Paul, an avid reader, and an anonymous donation was made by a local library supporter to purchase mobile shelving in the children’s area. The new layout plan maximizes every square inch of the 4,125 square foot space. None of this would be possible without the generous support of these families as well as the entire community that loves this special library by the sea.
The SSI Library will reopen on April 19. Until then, visit the libraries’ website at moglibraries.org for announcements and progress updates.
